FOOTBALL - Coventry City come from behind to win at Sheffield United and move five points clear at top of table

COVENTRY City came from behind to win 2-1 away at Sheffield United and stretch their lead at the top of the Championship table to five points.

Goals from Haji Wright and Jack Rudoni turned the game on its head at Bramall Lane after Harrison Burrows put the home side ahead early in the second period.

And the result means Coventry now lead the Championship table by five points after Middlesbrough could only draw at home to Leicester City in midweek.

The Blades controlled proceedings early on as Carl Rushworth tipped Gustavo Hamer’s dangerous ball across the six-yard box from the left behind for a corner.

From the resulting corner, Andre Brooks lashed a loose ball into the side netting via the aid of a deflection before Ephron Mason-Clark and Japhet Tanganga clashed off the ball as both players received yellow cards.

The Sky Blues grew into the contest as Jack Rudoni saw his cutback cleared to safety while Wright lashed over the bar after wrestling his way into the area.

And Patrick Bamford then wasted a gilt-edged chance moments later when he received Sydie Peck’s pass only to shoot straight at Rushworth from eight-yards out.

Coventry responded with a chance of their own just past the half-hour mark as Milan van Ewijk flashed a ball across the face of goal only for Femi Seriki to poke the ball behind for a corner with Wright waiting to turn the ball home.

However, the home side broke the deadlock three minutes after half time when Hamer played a reverse pass into the path of Burrows who saw his effort deflect off Joel Latibeaudiere and past a helpless Rushworth.

The Sky Blues equalised on 52 minutes as Mason-Clark found Wright towards the left edge of the penalty area and the striker cut inside before blasting a powerful effort through Blades goalkeeper Michael Cooper from 15-yards out.

And Coventry completed the turnaround five minutes later when Rudoni headed Mason-Clark’s cross from the left into the bottom right corner from eight-yards out.

United almost drew level just past the hour mark as Callum O’Hare’s low strike flicked up off the boot of Bobby Thomas and deflected narrowly over the crossbar.

The Sky Blues almost added a third goal when a loose ball dropped to Tatsuhiro Sakamoto on the edge of the penalty area who saw his shot on the half-volley pushed behind by Cooper at full stretch diving low down to his left.

Coventry held firm in the remaining minutes to earn back-to-back away victories as the Sky Blues won at Bramall Lane for the first time since 2013.
