FOOTBALL - Coventry City cruise to away win at struggling West Bromwich Albion

COVENTRY City cruised to a 2-0 victory away at West Bromwich Albion to move four points clear at the top of the Championship table.

First-half goals from Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni earned the Sky Blues a first away win since November at The Hawthorns.

And Coventry now lead Middlesbrough by four points at the Championship’s summit although Boro have a game in hand.

Frank Lampard’s side made the perfect start when Mason-Clark chested down Milan van Ewijk’s ball in-behind and coolly lifted a shot over Max O’Leary in the Albion net after just five minutes.

O’Leary got his fingertips to the shot while Alfie Gilchrist unsuccessfully attempted to clear the ball before it crossed the line.

And the Sky Blues doubled their lead in style on 32 minutes after Albion allowed Rudoni to run with the ball from inside his own half before the midfielder lashed an unstoppable effort into the top-left corner from 20-yards out.

The home side managed a single effort on goal in the first period as Alex Mowatt dragged a shot wide with the final kick of the half.

The visitors contained Albion for much of the second period as Mason-Clark forced O’Leary into a routine save while van Ewijk blazed over.

Albion offered little attacking threat as Jayson Molumby headed narrowly over at a corner while Carl Rushworth saved from Isaac Price late on.

Coventry comfortably saw out the final minutes to extend their lead at the top of the table.
