COVENTRY City exited the Carabao Cup at the second round stage following a 2-1 defeat at Championship rivals Millwall.

A late penalty from Haji Wright gave the Sky Blues hope after Massimo Luongo and Kamarl Grant put the Lions in command at The Den.

Coventry lost for the first time this season in all competitions after starting the Championship season with two wins and a draw.

The home side spurned the first chance of the game as Aidomo Emakhu blasted a free-kick over the crossbar from 30-yards out.

Sky Blues defender Miguel Angel Brau then made a fine block to deflect Wes Harding’s close range effort over the top.

However, the home side broke the deadlock on 33 minutes when Luongo fired a snapshot into the bottom left corner on the turn following a corner from the right.

City went close at the other end as Matt Grimes curled a free-kick narrowly wide of the post from 20-yards out.

And the Sky Blues almost drew level after the break as Max Crocombe tipped Kaine Kesler-Hayden’s header from Brau’s cross behind for a corner.

However, Millwall doubled their lead on 76 minutes when Grant powered home a header from a corner from the left.

City searched for a way back into the game as substitute Jack Rudoni tried his luck from distance and forced Crocombe into another save.

The Sky Blues won a penalty on 89 minutes after Wright jinked his way across the penalty area and Harding caught the City man with a sliding challenge.

Wright fired the resulting penalty into the bottom left corner but it proved too little too late.

Coventry are next in action against Oxford United on Saturday, August 30 with kick-off at 3pm at the Kassam Stadium.
