COVENTRY City need just four points to secure promotion to the Premier League following a goalless draw away at play-off contenders Hull City.
The Sky Blues edged closer to a dream return to the top flight after playing out a drab stalemate at the MKM Stadium.
The result leaves Coventry 12 points clear at the top of the Championship table with four points required from the club’s final five games to secure promotion to the Premier League.
Hull created the game’s first chance as Joe Gelhardt blasted a shot narrowly wide of the post from 20-yards out after Liam Millar switched the play to the right flank.
Sky Blues defender Liam Kitching then produced a sensational block to prevent John Egan from breaking the deadlock after Carl Rushworth came for and dropped a ball into the box.
Coventry responded with a chance of their own just past the half-hour mark as the ball broke kindly to Victor Torp who saw his first time effort from 25-yards out saved by Ivor Pandur.
Chances remained at a premium after the break as Gelhardt sent a tame header straight into the hands of Rushworth early in the second period.
Frank Lampard’s side felt they should have had a penalty on 71 minutes when Milan van Ewijk’s cross from the right hit the arm of Lewie Coyle in the box.
However, the referee remained unmoved as the game finished goalless with the Sky Blues able to clinch promotion in their next league fixture if results go their way.
Coventry are next in action against already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, April 11 with kick-off at 12.30pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
