COVENTRY City remain unbeaten at home following a goalless draw with Sunderland as substitute Haji Wright spurned the Sky Blues best chance of the afternoon.
Wright was denied by Black Cats goalkeeper Anthony Patterson when one-on-one late on while Ben Wilson made a terrific double stop early in the second half at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
The result means City sit 11th in the Championship table after four matches.
In a first half of few chances, Bradley Dack shot well wide of goal when well-placed in the box early on before Matty Godden fired straight at Sunderland goalkeeper Patterson from Kasey Palmer’s lofted pass at the other end.
Just before the half-hour mark, Ben Sheaf’s effort deflected into the path of Godden who could only turn the ball into the arms of Patterson from close range.
The best chance of the half came when Palmer’s excellent through ball sent Ellis Simms through on goal only for Patterson to save the striker’s effort at the near post.
However, the visitors made a strong start to the second period, forcing Sky Blues stopper Wilson into a magnificent double save as he first denied Dan Neil’s driven shot before keeping out Dennis Cirkin’s follow-up effort from close range.
And Sunderland went close again moments later when Jack Clarke’s low shot looped onto the top of the net via the aid of a deflection.
Mark Robins’ side responded with a couple of chances of their own as Godden’s flicked header from Dasilva’s cross went straight at Patterson before Palmer’s curling effort was also comfortably saved.
The Sky Blues spurned a glorious chance to take the lead late on when debutant Yasin Ayari set up substitute Wright for a chance as Patterson made a crucial save when one-on-one from inside the box.
The visitors almost stole the points at the death with Wilson making an important save to keep out a flicked effort at the near post before Kyle McFadzean made a crucial block to deny Jobe Bellingham a shot on goal.
