COVENTRY City forward Haji Wright has suffered an Achilles injury on international duty with the United States of America.
Wright has sustained an injury to his left Achilles and will play no further part in USA’s CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign.
The 27-year-old scored in USA’s 5-0 group stage win against Trinidad and Tobago but did not feature in America’s subsequent 1-0 victory against Saudi Arabia.
And USA confirmed via a statement that Wright will now return to Coventry for ‘further evaluation and treatment’.
The statement reads: “Haji Wright is dealing with an Achilles issue that will not be resolved in time for him to continue competing in the tournament.
“He will return to Coventry City for further evaluation and treatment.”
USA boss Mauricio Pochettino added: “It’s always sad to see a player leave, because the group was very good, and he’s a very good guy, and adds very good quality to the group, [a] different option.
“He’s a player that can play in different positions in the attack. Yes, sad situation, sad for him, sad for the team, but I think we need to prioritise his process to recovery.
“He already arrived with some problems in his Achilles, and then we cannot fix the problem. He increased [his] pain.
“That is why that [this] is the decision that we take.”
USA can not call-up a replacement for Wright as per tournament rules.
Pochettino’s side beat Haiti 2-1 in their final group match to set-up a quarter-final against Costa Rica.
