FOOTBALL - Coventry City stretch lead at top of Championship table to nine points with victory at Swansea City

COVENTRY City stretched their lead at the top of the Championship table to nine points with a comfortable 3-0 victory away at Swansea City.

The Sky Blues scored three goals in the space of 11 first-half minutes as Brandon Thomas-Asante, Matt Grimes and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto all found the net at the Swansea.com Stadium.

And the victory means Coventry lead the Championship table by nine points after title rivals Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town could only manage draws.

The Swans almost broke the deadlock early on as Josh Tymon swept a shot against the crossbar from 12-yards out.

And the Sky Blues spurned a chance of their own on the quarter-hour mark as Ellis Simms sent a tame volley straight at Lawrence Vigouroux from Ephron Mason-Clark’s cross.

However, Coventry broke the deadlock from the penalty spot on 32 minutes when Thomas-Asante blasted the ball through Vigouroux after Ben Cabango fouled Mason-Clark in the box.

And the Sky Blues doubled their lead six minutes later as Grimes steered a low volley into the net from 20-yards out via the aid of the post to score against his former club.

The Swans went close prior to Coventry’s second goal when Goncalo Franco headed wide while Melker Wedell’s shot struck the inside of the post moments after the visitors doubled their advantage.

Frank Lampard’s side all but sealed the points two minutes before half time when Sakamoto’s shot deflected past Vigouroux at the goalkeeper’s near post.

Coventry almost struck again just before the hour mark as Vigouroux denied Simms before Thomas-Asante saw his follow up attempt deflected behind.

Sky Blues goalkeeper Carl Rushworth had little to do in the second period as he clawed Wedell’s late header to safety as Coventry cruised to victory in South Wales.
