COVENTRY City suffered a shock first round exit from the Carabao Cup after two late goals saw the Sky Blues slip to a 2-1 defeat away at League Two side AFC Wimbledon.

City looked to be heading through after Matty Godden scored a first-half penalty only for Omar Bugiel to equalise for the home side four minutes from time.

And Ryan McLean then stunned Coventry with a 96th-minute winner to knock the Sky Blues out of the competition at the first hurdle at the Cherry Red Records Stadium.

Wimbledon spurned a glorious chance to take the lead as James Tilley somehow blazed wide from 15-yards out with the goal at his mercy.

However, the Sky Blues won a penalty on 17 minutes when Haji Wright drew a foul in the box as Godden stepped up and coolly found the bottom right corner from the resulting spot kick.

And City almost doubled their lead when Gustavo Hamer curled a free-kick inches past the right-hand post from 25-yards out.

Coventry should have wrapped up the win in the second half when Wimbledon goalkeeper Nik Tzanev parried a shot into the path of Ellis Simms who was unable to turn the ball home from five-yards out.

And City were made to rue those missed chances on 86 minutes when Bugiel pounced on a mistake by Liam Kelly to drill the ball past Brad Collins from just inside the penalty area.

With the game destined for penalties, Wimbledon snatched victory at the death as McLean volleyed home a cross at the back post into the top right corner to complete a dramatic late turnaround.

Coventry are next in action at home to Middlesbrough on Saturday, August 12 with kick-off at 12.30pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
