COVENTRY City slipped to a 2-0 defeat against West Bromwich Albion as the Sky Blues lost at home in the league for the first time this season.
Goals in either half from Grady Diangana and Brandon Thomas-AsanteĀ sealed victory for the Baggies as City saw their 10-match unbeaten run at home come to an end at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
And the result means Coventry remain 20th in the Championship table, eight points outside of the play-off places and six points above the drop.
Mark Robins’ side had the game’s first chance as Tatsuhiro Sakamoto created space for a shot from just inside the penalty area with West Brom goalkeeper Alex Palmer pushing the ball to safety.
However, City felt they should have had a penalty moments later when Baggies defender Cedric Kipre appeared to move his arm in the way of Ben Sheaf’s shot.
The visitors took the lead with their first meaningful attack on 17 minutes when Ben Wilson failed to hold Nathaniel Chalobah’s shot from distance and Diangana controlled the loose ball before finishing from close range.
City should have drawn level early in the second half only for Haji Wright to shoot inches past the post when one-on-one with Palmer.
And Albion made the Sky Blues pay for that missed chance on 69 minutes when Thomas-Asante beat the offside trap and produced a clinical finish into the top right corner of the goal from Matt Phillips’s pass.
The visitors had a chance to add to their lead soon after as Thomas-Asante intercepted a loose pass before driving into the box only to blaze over from 15-yards out.
Coventry are next in action away at Preston North End on Saturday, November 4 with kick-off at 3pm at Deepdale.
