FOOTBALL - Coventry City's Matt Grimes looking forward to 'mouth-watering' clash with Stoke City

MATT Grimes described Coventry City’s top-of-the-table clash against Stoke City this weekend as a ‘mouth-watering’ prospect.

Coventry travel to Stoke with the Sky Blues four points clear of the Potters at the top of the Championship standings.

The fixture also sees former Coventry boss Mark Robins take on his old side for the second time since the Sky Blues sacked him last November.

And while Grimes joined Coventry after Robins received the sack last season, the midfielder understands the influence the now Stoke boss had during his time with the Sky Blues.

Grimes said: “First versus second is always one that catches the eye, it’s a mouth-watering prospect.

“It’s not gone unnoticed in how influential he [Mark Robins] was for that period of time when he was in charge.

“He’s taken this club from League Two up to where it is now and put it in a brilliant position, competing at the top end of the Championship.

“It can’t be understated how well he did here and now he’s gone to Stoke and he’s doing well there as well.

“Although I didn’t work for him, you do hear about how well he has done.”

Grimes played the full 90 minutes in midweek as Coventry came from behind to beat Sheffield United.

And the captain praised his side’s response to going behind as City scored three second-half goals to return to winning ways.

Grimes added: “After our first loss of the season, everyone was looking at the next game, how are they going to react?

“We’re not used to losing. We found ourselves one-nil down [against Sheffield United] but to respond how we did just shows the character and togetherness of the lads.

“12 games is enough to judge a team in a season with Wrexham being the 13th game. It was just about getting back to our standards and we responded well.

“We’ll just be looking to perform how we have been and see what happens.”

Coventry travel to Stoke on Saturday, November 8 with kick-off at 3pm at the bet365 Stadium.
