COVENTRY City claimed friendly wins against Forest Green Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers under-23’s to maintain their perfect start to pre-season.
The Sky Blues saw off League Two champions Forest Green 1-0 in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Ben Sheaf scoring the winning goal.
Sheaf curled home a stunning winner on 11 minutes at Lilleshall National Sports Centre as Mark Robins handed minutes to 22 players ahead of the new campaign.
And City then hammered Wolves under-23’s 8-1 at the Sir Jack Hayward Training Ground as Matty Godden and Martyn Waghorn both netted a brace.
Waghorn opened the scoring with a half-volley from Callum O’Hare’s pass before the midfielder then teed up Godden for City’s second.
And the Sky Blues trebled their lead when Waghorn scored from the penalty spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way, after Godden was fouled in the box.
Coventry extended their advantage before the break when Michael Rose’s powerful header found the top corner from Jake Bidwell’s corner.
And Godden completed the first-half rout with a header into the bottom corner from Waghorn’s pass to hand City a five-goal lead at the interval.
Sweden international Viktor Gyokeres added City’s sixth from Tyler Walker’s drilled cross before Wolves scored a consolation.
Sheaf scored his second goal in as many pre-season games to extend Coventry’s lead before Gus Hamer completed the scoring direct from a corner.
The Sky Blues are next in action away at Oxford United on Saturday, July 16 with kick-off at 3pm at the Kassam Stadium.
