MATTY Shipman’s second-half goal helped Coventry Sphinx earn a point in a 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Gresley Rovers.
Shipman equalised for Sphinx two minutes into the second period after Nathan Banton put Gresley ahead shortly before half time at the Sphinx Industrial Supplies Arena.
And the result means Coventry sit 16th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, four points above the relegation zone.
Chances were at a premium in the first half as Jac Redhead saw his shot saved by recovering Gresley goalkeeper Harvey Woodward after Shipman beat the visiting stopper to a loose ball in the box.
And Woodward then kept out Jordan Hayward when one-on-one from Redhead’s superb threaded through ball.
However, Gresley made Coventry pay for those missed chances as Banton opened the scoring on 41 minutes with a neat finish past Keelan Fallows.
Sphinx responded two minutes into the second half as Shipman showed excellent strength to turn in the box and fire a powerful effort into the corner of the goal from Redhead’s pass.
Despite Sphinx enjoying a brief spell of dominance following the goal, neither team managed to create a clear-cut chance in the remaining minutes as the game ended all square.
Sphinx are next in action away at Quorn on Saturday, December 23 with kick-off at 3pm at Farley Way Stadium.
