COVENTRY Sphinx secured their first league win as a step four club with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against bottom of the table AFC Rushden and Diamonds.
Despite falling behind and playing most of the second half with 10-men, Dylan Parker’s late goal lifted Sphinx out of the relegation zone.
That came after William Jones put Rushden ahead at the break before Matty Shipman equalised shortly after half time while Sphinx’s Luke Downes saw red on 55 minutes at Sphinx Industrial Supplies Arena.
The result means Coventry sit 18th in the Northern Premier League Midlands Division, one point above the relegation zone.
Rushden took the lead on 22 minutes when Jones’s flicked volley went in off the crossbar after Sphinx failed to deal with a corner from the right.
Coventry drew level on 50 minutes as Shipman produced a fine finish into the bottom corner from captain Callum Woodward’s pass.
However, just five minutes later, Sphinx midfielder Luke Downes saw red for a second bookable offence.
Sphinx kept themselves in the game and snatched the points on 89 minutes when Parker’s instinctive finish from Shipman’s initial header saw him hook the ball into the goal from eight-yards out.
Coventry are next in action away at Rugby Town on Saturday, September 30 with kick-off at 3pm at Butlin Road.
