FOOTBALL - Coventry Sphinx edged out by high-flying Quorn in seven-goal thriller

COVENTRY Sphinx suffered a 4-3 defeat against high-flying Quorn as the visitors mounted a late comeback in vain.

Sphinx briefly drew level courtesy of Shay Willock’s early goal only for the home side to take a commanding three-goal lead into the break at Farley Way.

Substitute Roan Newey netted twice for the visitors in injury time to reduce the deficit as Sphinx just fell short in their attempt to pull off an extraordinary late comeback.

The result means Coventry sit 18th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, one point above the relegation zone.

Quorn broke the deadlock after just six minutes when Kobe Hall picked out the top corner from inside the box.

However, Sphinx equalised three minutes later as Willock’s low effort from just outside the penalty area found the bottom corner.

The home side reclaimed the lead on 11 minutes in a frantic opening to the game as Zak Goodson struck from the edge of the box.

And Quorn stretched their lead on 27 minutes when Reece Fyfe scored a fine free-kick from 20-yards out.

The hosts all but wrapped up the points in first-half injury time as Ryan Beswick sent Charlie Woods the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Sphinx reduced the deficit in the 92nd minute when Newey found the net following a counter attack.

And Newey struck again less than a minute later but it proved too little too late as Sphinx saw their winless run stretch to three matches.

Coventry are next in action against Sporting Khalsa on Saturday, November 2 with kick-off at 3pm at the Sphinx Industrial Supplies Arena.
