COVENTRY Sphinx took a giant step towards securing safety with an impressive 3-2 win away at play-off hopefuls Loughborough Dynamo.
Sphinx came from behind to lead at the break courtesy of goals from Matty Shipman and Jordan Hayward before Taylor Anderson’s late own goal sealed the points at the Newton Fallowell Stadium.
The result means Coventry sit 17th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.
Despite starting the brighter of the two teams, Sphinx fell behind on 26 minutes when George Ball unleashed a superb strike into the top corner which left goalkeeper Keelan Fallows with no chance.
However, Sphinx equalised on 34 minutes when Callum Woodward drew a foul in the box and Shipman stepped up to send the resulting penalty into the bottom corner.
And Coventry completed the turnaround two minutes later as Hayward prodded the ball past Lewis King from Ashton DeMulder’s excellent through pass.
Loughborough drew level after the break on 74 minutes when Rob Norris smashed a free-kick in off the crossbar from a central position 20-yards from goal.
However, Sphinx won the game 10 minutes from time as Anderson inadvertently directed the ball into his own net as he attempted to tackle Shipman in the box.
Sphinx held on to secure a priceless victory and end their six-match winless run in the league.
Coventry are next in action at home to Sutton Coldfield Town on Saturday, March 30 with kick-off at 3pm at Sphinx Industrial Supplies Arena.
