COVENTRY Sphinx claimed an impressive 2-0 win against play-off chasing Lye Town on Boxing Day before slipping to a 1-0 defeat at Bedworth United on New Year’s Day.
On Boxing Day, goals in either half from Jack Downes and Jordan Hayward helped Sphinx to a first home win in the league at the Sphinx Industrial Supplies Arena since September.
However, Coventry suffered a narrow defeat to Bedworth in their opening game of 2024 as Leo Stone scored the only goal at The Oval while Sphinx finished the match with nine-men.
That came after Sphinx lost 4-2 at Quorn in their last game before Christmas despite Downes and Jac Redhead twice drawing the visitors level at Farley Way.
The results mean Sphinx sit 16th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, five points above the relegation zone.
Against Lye, Coventry took the lead on the half-hour mark when Downes’s shot from 25-yards out took a slight deflection before finding the net from Redhead’s pass.
And Sphinx sealed the points in the final minute of regulation time as Hayward forced his way into the box before picking out the far corner with the outside of his boot after good work from Finlay Shorrock.
However, both Shorrock and Downes saw red late on in Sphinx’s defeat at Bedworth after Stone fired the home side into the lead on 26 minutes – a goal which proved decisive.
Coventry are next in action at home to Spalding United on Saturday, January 6 with kick-off at 3pm at Sphinx Industrial Supplies Arena.
