COVENTRY Sphinx made the perfect start to the new season with a 2-0 opening day victory against Mickleover.

First-half goals from Matty Shipman and Jac Redhead sealed an impressive victory for the hosts at the Cameron Slater Arena.

The result means Sphinx sit third in the Northern Premier League Midlands table.

Coventry broke the deadlock on 20 minutes when Shipman drilled a shot into the bottom left corner from just outside the penalty area,

And Redhead doubled Sphinx’s lead two minutes before half time with a snapshot past Jack McDowell at the Mickleover goalkeeper’s near post.

Sphinx had substitute Harvey Smith sent off on 84 minutes after he picked up two yellow cards just one minute after he replaced goalscorer Shipman.

Coventry are next in action against Sutton Coldfield Town on Tuesday, August 12 with kick-off at 7.45pm at Coles Lane.
