COVENTRY Sphinx twice surrendered the lead in a 2-2 draw with Cambridge City as the home side moved another point closer to safety.
Sphinx led courtesy of Matty Shipman’s early penalty before Jordan Hayward restored Coventry’s lead in the second half only for Cambridge to twice draw level at Sphinx Industrial Supplies Arena.
And the result means Sphinx sit 17th in the Northern Premier League Midlands table, eight points clear of the relegation zone.
Coventry made the perfect start when Joe Pursey drew a foul in the box on five minutes and Shipman stepped up to send Cambridge goalkeeper Kacper Kurylowicz the wrong way from the resulting penalty.
However, the visitors equalised on 18 minutes as Jake Battersby cut across a powerful shot from 35-yards out which curled away from Sphinx goalkeeper Keelan Fallows and clipped the post on its way in.
Sphinx reclaimed the lead on 55 minutes when Hayward finished Ashton DeMulder’s cross from close range after good work down the right.
Cambridge levelled for a second time on 61 minutes as Ed Tassell bundled the ball home after Sphinx failed to deal with a dangerous cross from the right.
Coventry are next in action away at Loughborough Dynamo on Saturday, March 23 with kick-off at 3pm at the Newton Fallowell Stadium.
