COVENTRY United suffered a last gasp 2-1 defeat at home to local rivals and league leaders Coventry Sphinx whilst there was also late drama in their 2-2 draw with Histon on Good Friday.
The Red and Greens looked to have dented Sphinx’s title hopes after Sami Muzaffar opened the scoring just before half time only for Sphinx to equalise and then snatch the points in injury time at Butts Park Arena.
That came after United trailed by two goals at Histon on Good Friday only for late strikes from Adam Miles and Joe Blowers to rescue a point for Coventry at Bridge Road.
The results mean Coventry sit eighth in the United Counties League Premier Division South table with three matches left to play.
United’s derby clash with Sphinx was played in front of a season-high 308 spectators as Muzaffar produced a stunning first time finish into the top left corner from the edge of the penalty on 43 minutes to put the home side in front at the break.
However, Sphinx equalised on 55 minutes when the ball fell to Jack Downes who drilled a low effort into the bottom corner from 20-yards out.
And there was late drama as Sphinx struck on 92 minutes to secure a vital three points with United only able to clear the ball into the path of Leo Stone who finished from 10-yards out to leave the Red and Greens stunned.
At Histon, the home side took the lead on seven minutes when Luke Crisp headed into the far corner before the hosts struck again on 44 minutes courtesy of a Luke Lindsay header at the near post from a long throw.
Coventry were presented with a gift to reduce the deficit on 85 minutes as Histon made a mess of a long pass upfield and headed the ball into the path of Miles who delicately lifted the ball into the right corner.
And the visitors equalised just three minutes later when another long ball caused Histon problems and Blowers poked an effort past the onrushing goalkeeper.
Coventry United are next in action at home to March Town United on Saturday, April 15 with kick-off at 3pm at Butts Park Arena.
