FOOTBALL - Coventry United dreaming of Wembley after reaching FA Vase quarter-finals with victory against North Shields

COVENTRY United moved one step closer to Wembley following a 2-1 victory against North Shields in the fifth round of the FA Vase.

Goals from Charlie Faulkner and Nehemia Zazi at Butts Park Arena sent United through to the quarter-finals of the Vase for the first time in the club’s history.

The draw for the quarter-finals of the competition will take place on Monday, February 9 at around 3.15pm live on talkSPORT 2.

United went close early on as Ryan Harkin nodded Danny Fraser’s cross from the left wide of the post from four-yards out.

At the other end, Coventry captain Chris Cox made a vital last-ditch challenge in the box after North Shields created a three-on-two situation.

And the visitors spurned a golden chance soon after as Jordan Lashley played in Stephen Hall who blazed a shot over the crossbar when one-on-one with Dan Moore.

However, United broke the deadlock on 28 minutes when Faulkner pressured a North Shields defender into an error and curled a shot past Callum Elliott from 15-yards out.

After the break, Moore produced a stunning double save to keep Coventry in front as he kept out Blair Adams’ twice in quick succession.

Moore kept out Blair Adams’ initial effort from 10-yards out and then reacted sharply to save a diving header from the same player.

The visitors continued to create chances as Hall glanced a header inches past the post before substitute Lee Mason headed over from close range.

However, Coventry doubled their lead on 79 minutes when substitute Zazi fired a loose ball into the top-right corner from 12-yards out after Faulkner appeared to be fouled in the box.

North Shields halved the deficit nine minutes into injury time as Ben Sampson squeezed a shot past Moore from the left edge of the six-yard box.

However, there was only enough time to restart the game before the final whistle sounded with United’s place in the last eight confirmed.
