COVENTRY United Women were thrashed 5-0 in the fifth round of Women’s FA Cup by Women’s Super League (WSL) side Brighton and Hove Albion.
The Red and Greens gave a good account of themselves for large periods only to concede four goals in the final 12 minutes as the Seagulls cruised to victory at Broadfield Stadium.
Albion midfielder Brianna Visalli opened the scoring on 17 minutes with a fine curling effort that found the top corner and beat United debutant Demi Lambourne in the Coventry goal.
United came close to an equaliser when Morgan Cross stabbed wide at the near post from Isobel Goodwin’s left-wing cross.
However, the introduction of South Korea international Lee Geum-min in the second half allowed Brighton to take control of the game as she set up Visalli for her second of the game on 78 minutes.
And as the clock wore down, Lee sealed the win for Brighton on 88 minutes when she turned and fired a low effort into the net from Kate Robinson’s low cross.
As Coventry began to tire, Brighton added a fourth goal when Fran Orthodoxou diverted Robinson’s low cross into her own net.
And Brighton added some gloss to the scoreline in the third minute of injury time when Lee controlled Lambourne’s rushed clearance and sent a thunderous half-volley into the net from 25-yards out.
Coventry are next in action away at Durham on Sunday, March 5 with kick-off at 12pm at Maiden Castle.
