COVENTRY United Women secured their first win of the season after they beat divisional rivals Southampton 2-0 in the League Cup.
Meesha Dudley-Jones and Ebony Wiseman struck in the second half to secure victory for Lee Burch’s side at Butts Park Arena.
Former Coventry striker Katie Wilkinson almost came back to haunt her former club when she played in Ella Pusey who rounded Mia Smith in the home goal only for Jodie Bartle to make a superb clearance off the line.
The game was scoreless at the break with Coventry unable to create a meaningful chance despite enjoying plenty of possession.
However, United were rewarded for a fast start to the second period on 50 minutes when McAteer, on her home debut, released Dudley-Jones who found the far corner.
And Coventry were soon two goals to the good when Wiseman scored a screamer on 55 minutes as her long range effort flew into the top corner.
Southampton rallied late on as Pusey blazed a shot over the bar when one-on-one with Smith before Georgie Freeland rattled the crossbar with a first time effort from the edge of the penalty area.
Coventry are next in action at home to London City Lionesses on Sunday, October 16 with kick-off at 2pm at Butts Park Arena.
