ELLIS Simms insists Coventry City’s win at Middlesbrough in a top-of-the-table clash is a ‘big statement’ to the rest of the Championship.

Simms scored twice for the Sky Blues at the Riverside Stadium to help Coventry move 10 points clear at the top of the table.

The striker scored a stunning opener to put the visitors ahead before later completing the scoring to seal the points while defender Liam Kitching also scored a brace.

And Simms admits the victory feels like a statement win with Coventry now 10 points clear of Stoke City at the Championship’s summit.

Simms said: “It’s definitely one of them [the best goals I’ve scored in my career]. It’s a great finish, it was right in the top corner.

“It’s a big statement. We knew coming here was going to be difficult. They’ve not lost many games.

“We just need to keep our heads on it [being 10 points clear] because things can change so fast.

“We just need to keep at it, keep the form and just keep going.

“There’s no better feeling than celebrating in front of the fans at the end. I can’t describe it. It’s just wonderful.”

Simms led the line for just the third time in the league this season in the absence of Haji Wright through injury.

And the striker played a key role in helping Coventry become the first team to win at Middlesbrough in the league this season.

Simms added: “We knew it was going to be a difficult game and the lads just stuck at it. It’s a massive three points and a good performance.

“We started very well and went two-nil up. They brought it back so it was another test for us because I don’t know if that’s happened this season.

“They had spells, they’re a good side so we had to dig deep but we showed great determination to keep pushing.

“We were  a massive threat going forward. The two goals late on just solidified the performance.

“Everyone dug in and played their part. I’m pleased for everyone.”

Coventry are next in action against Charlton Athletic on Saturday, November 29 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
