FOOTBALL - Expansion of Championship play-offs discussed by EFL Board

THE EFL Board is discussing the possible expansion of the Championship play-offs, according to reports.

According to Sky Sports News, the proposal would see the seventh and eighth-placed clubs in the division also qualify for the play-offs.

Currently, only the teams who finish third, fourth, fifth and sixth contest the end-of-season play-offs.

However, according to Sky, the new proposal has the widespread support among Championship club bosses.

Sky claim the EFL formally communicated the proposal to the 24 Championship clubs last week.

And the EFL Board is now considering the plan due to the positive response to the idea.

Preston North End chief executive Peter Ridsdale put the proposal forward following talks with other Championship executives.

Ridsdale is a representative of the Championship on the EFL Board.

Sky report the changes will not be introduced this season with any new proposal requiring the approval of the FA and Premier League.

Coventry City have finished in the play-off places in two of the last three seasons.

Sky Blues owner and chairman Doug King recently questioned the competitiveness of the division with clubs who receive parachute payments able to outspend the rest of the Championship.
