FOOTBALL - Frank Lampard admits Coventry City 'can do better' ahead of Bristol City clash

FRANK Lampard admits Coventry City ‘can do better’ as the Sky Blues prepare to host Bristol City this weekend.

City beat Sheffield Wednesday on penalties to reach the FA Cup fourth round at the Coventry Building Society Arena in their last outing but have failed to win any of their last three league matches.

And Lampard wants to see more from his side against play-off chasing Bristol City.

Lampard said: “I want more. I’ve only been here a short time and there’s a lot of work to be done and things don’t change overnight.

“I want to see more things I like and then other times not and it’s very normal when you come into a club mid-season.

“Our home form has been good, but we can do better that’s for sure, I’m very demanding with that.

“Each new game brings a new challenge, so we’ve had a long week to prepare for Bristol City now.

“They’re a good footballing team. They’re higher than us in the league and we have to aspire to make that right and focus on ourselves, but we will have a good awareness of them.”

The Sky Blues have registered three clean sheets since Lampard’s arrival as head coach in November – having recorded just two in the league all season prior to his appointment.

And while Lampard admits City want to improve their defensive record, he insists change will not happen overnight.

Lampard added: “It’s a good base and it’s the first base of a team.

“When I came in everyone was telling me how much we concede and there is no absolute answer in one specific way, it’s not ‘oh it’s the back four/five or it’s the goalkeeper’ it’s the team.

“A lot of goals you concede can come from the pressure at the top end of the pitch and how that is, so there is a lot of things to get right, and those things don’t usually change overnight.

“Every player has got to take individual responsibility in that as well and it’s our job collectively to set the team up well and try and eradicate individual mistakes and errors.

“It’s a work in progress and it always will be. There aren’t many teams in the modern day that keep clean sheets again and again, but we want to be better at it that’s for sure.”

Coventry entertain Bristol City on Saturday, January 18 with kick-off at 3pm at the CBS Arena.
