FRANK Lampard admits Coventry City must improve at the top end of the pitch after the Sky Blues started the season with a goalless draw against Hull City.
Coventry managed just three shots on target from 18 attempts on goal with clear-cut chances at a premium at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Despite the draw, Lampard felt the Sky Blues deserved to win the game but admits his side lacked fluidity at times when approaching the final third of the the pitch.
Lampard said: “Bit disappointed not to win the game, happy with the clean sheet.
“I thought we were the better team and deserved it, with a lot of control of possession, we played in their half a lot.
“We created some chances, not easy to create clear-cut because they were happy to defend their box and they did it pretty well.
“It may be an element of first game and a little bit of lacking that five per cent at the top end of the pitch.
“We didn’t have that little extra yard to shift, shoot or crosses firing across the face and slight timing issues at times and I think that’s probably the difference, otherwise I think we win the game.”
The closest either side came to winning the game saw Milan van Ewijk’s shot from 20-yards out hit the post in the second half.
And Lampard praised the attitude of his players for playing on the front foot throughout.
Lampard added: “They’re not an easy opposition and it was never going to be an easy game.
“I’m not too disappointed because I think the players did everything, we wanted of them, it was just that last bit for us.
“There were some good moments for us at different times, and it didn’t quite fall for us, Rudi nearly had one and Haji and Brandon nearly, it was just one of those things.
“I think I’ve got quite a bit of perspective on it already and I’m pleased with the attitude and pleased with the atmosphere in the stadium.
“I know everyone wants to fly out the blocks and win this game, but this is the Championship it will be a long long season and we just have to keep going.”
Coventry are next in action against Luton Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, August 12 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the CBS Arena.
