FRANK Lampard declared Coventry City’s win against Derby County as one of his ‘favourite games’ as Sky Blues boss.
City won an eight-goal thriller 5-3 at Pride Park which included a dramatic turnaround after Coventry scored three goals in the space of seven second-half minutes.
And Lampard praised his side’s character and belief after the Sky Blues secured their first league win of the season.
Lampard said: “I thought we were fantastic in the first half, I thought we were fantastic all game.
“If it’s not my favourite game since I’ve been here, then it’s right up there because of the character, because of the quality and we kept playing and kept pushing.
“We showed belief and we’ve won at a place where a lot of teams are going to find it really tough.
“You need goals and we scored from set-pieces but we also scored a couple of real quality goals as well and I think that quality from us was the difference.”
The Sky Blues led twice in the first half courtesy of goals from Bobby Thomas and Haji Wright
However, Derby twice pegged City back and took the lead early in the second half as Callum Elder, Carlton Morris and Ebou Adams all found the net.
Lampard’s men equalised later in the second period as Brandon Thomas-Asante’s close-range finish sparked a dramatic turnaround.
And quickfire goals from Ephron Mason-Clark and Victor Torp earned Coventry the points.
Victory saw Sky Blues boss Lampard triumph against his former side who he managed in the 2018/19 season.
And Lampard heaped praise on his players for showing cutting edge at the top end of the pitch following the club’s opening day stalemate against Hull.
Lampard added: “The players looked different and when I say different I mean, it was early season [the first game], we weren’t quite there at the top of the pitch.
“But we were really sharp against a back five that don’t give you any space, but we kept giving them problems all the time and when we played, we played with a real belief.
“We could play short, we could vary our game at the right time, and I’m just really pleased with the players because they’re the important ones.
“They’re out there and they have to have that belief at 3-2 down and they were outstanding.”
Coventry are next in action against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, August 23 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
