FRANK Lampard ruled out the danger of ‘overconfidence’ creeping into his side’s mindset as Coventry City prepare to play Southampton this weekend.
Coventry moved eight points clear at the top of the Championship table following a comfortable win against Preston North End in midweek.
And with nine games left to play the Sky Blues are in pole position to make a dream return to the Premier League.
However, Lampard insists his side’s determination to achieve promotion outweighs the danger of his side becoming overconfident after racking up six successive wins.
Lampard said: “It’s of the upmost importance [to keep feet on the ground].
“Confidence in football is a great thing but overconfidence is the most dangerous thing and we have to get that balance right.
“We have to remain humble and I don’t have huge worries with the group because these boys are very determined to succeed here.
“I can feel that and we have to keep that going for nine more games.”
The Sky Blues take on a Southampton side who saw boss Tonda Eckert win the division’s manager of the month award for February.
And Lampard expects a difficult game against a Saints side who found themselves just three points outside the play-off places following an upturn in form.
Lampard added: “He’s done a good job. They were in a tough moment and he’s had a real uplift in results.
“He’s changed the system and made his imprint straightaway and then maybe it levelled out a bit as this league does.
“They’re a very dangerous team who have moved up the league. I kind of expected them to.
“But that’s easy for me to say, to act upon that and do that, the manager’s done a good job.”
Coventry host Southampton on Saturday, March 14 with kick-off at 12.30pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
