FRANK Lampard praised Coventry City’s ‘maturity’ after the Sky Blues came from behind to beat bottom club Hull City.
Lampard earned his first home win as City boss against the Tigers thanks to second-half goals from Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
And Lampard felt his side responded well after falling behind against the run of play just before the interval.
Lampard said: “That’s good maturity [seeing the game out] because they were managing the game in the first half to a degree and when we got in front we managed it in the right way.
“We tried to stay in their half, staying in the corner and keeping the ball and make sure we don’t allow any counter attacks and get out to people and that’s a good maturity from a team.
“We played through them so easily and quickly and we created so many chances on the side and in the box, so I know that can be a bit soul destroying when you don’t get what you deserve and that’s probably happened a few times here.
“That becomes a mental issue, and my message was keep doing the same things and don’t get bored of doing them. Stay calm and build well and play through them like we were doing and don’t result to going long or breaking up the game and I thought they did that so full credit to them.”
After Joao Pedro fired Hull into the lead, Mason-Clark finished at the back post to draw City level before he then set-up Rudoni for the winning goal after Victor Torp had a penalty saved.
And Lampard heaped praise on Mason-Clark after the forward scored his third goal in four games since the former’s arrival as head coach.
Lampard added: “He’s a talented lad and I was aware of his talents coming in and he is a really nice and humble lad, and he wants to work.
“All I’ve done is given him the opportunity and a bit of information, not loads.
“Him arriving in the six-yard box, it takes time to get that skill, and he’s managed to do that for all his goals.
“The assist is absolutely top level, so these are first steps together, but he has to take the credit for that and since I’ve come in he’s been in top form and I think there’s more to come.”
Coventry are next in action against Portsmouth on Saturday, December 21 with kick-off at 12.30pm at Fratton Park.
