FOOTBALL - Frank Lampard wants Coventry City players to 'feel confident' in the final third ahead of Portsmouth trip

FRANK Lampard wants his players to ‘feel confident’ at the top end of the pitch ahead of a trip to struggling Portsmouth this weekend.

Coventry travel to the South Coast on the back of a come-from-behind victory against Hull City as Ephron Mason-Clark starred with a goal and an assist.

The Sky Blues have created a number of chances in the games since Lampard’s appointment although he admits his players must be more clinical in the final third.

Lampard said: “It [a win] always helps the mood and confidence, and the important thing is it doesn’t breed over confidence, it’s a good step in terms of the overall performance.

“When you review it, I think we were even better than what I thought on the day in parts and it’s good for the players to see that and understand some of the things we’re trying to do and that’s been useful to use in meetings this week.

“It says something about the way we play, and the next step is to be more clinical and take some more of those chances.

“Players are developing, and they need to find confidence and they need repetitive work and feeling to be confident at that end of the pitch.

“But it’s a nice sign for the team that we are creating chances.”

This weekend’s opponents Portsmouth sit one point from safety in the Championship relegation zone.

And Lampard insists City will not take anything for granted as the Sky Blues look to secure back-to-back wins for just the second time this season.

Lampard added: “If you look at their recent games and I know everyone’s eyes will be on Derby, but before that they were on a nice little run.

“They’ve got some decent results, they’ve beaten Bristol City, drawn against Norwich, two good teams in the league.

“We cannot disrespect them in anyway. Every game in this league is an opportunity but there are no games you should take anything for granted, far from it.

“We will fully respect them but go there feeling some good confidence ourselves from last week and impose ourselves on the game.”

Coventry travel to Portsmouth on Saturday, December 21 with kick-off at 12.30pm at Fratton Park.
