FRANK Lampard wants Coventry City to ‘close the gap’ to the teams at the top of the table ahead of hosting Queens Park Rangers this weekend.
The Sky Blues secured their first league win of the season last weekend with a thrilling 5-3 victory against Derby County at Pride Park.
Coventry failed to pick up a single point against the division’s top two sides last season – Leeds United and Burnley.
And Lampard wants to close the gap to the teams at the table this campaign after the Sky Blues finished 21 points behind third-placed Sheffield United.
Lampard said: “The best teams have to have to have that [adaptability] and we’re working to try and be the best we can be.
“The players have always been very good at taking on information and that was the big plus of last year to come in mid-season, quite quickly the things we spoke about, they started to deliver.
“There’s always a lot of room for improvement to get better and I think they understand that, because the gap was still pretty big last year to the top of the league.
“We have to have aspirations to close that and that’s through work.”
The Coventry Building Society Arena turned 20 years-old this week. Coventry beat weekend opponents QPR 3-0 in the club’s first-ever game at the Arena in August 2005.
And Lampard feels the Championship’s varying styles of play makes it difficult for teams to find consistency throughout the season.
Lampard added: “I think for a lot of teams in the Championship consistency is a tough thing to find and some of that is a credit to opponents because there’s a lot of different styles in this league.
“You always come up against different challenges week-to-week, so that’s why we’ don’t lean too much on last week.
“We take good things from it, but we understand the QPR are a tough team with a new manager, quite intense, some different players to what we came up against when we played them last year and that was a tough match for us at the Arena.
“It’s nice that it’s an anniversary game, but it’s important that we get our job right to make it the performance that we want.”
Coventry host QPR on Saturday, August 23 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
