GARY McAllister believes the title is Coventry City’s to lose and urged the club to target top spot rather than just aiming for promotion.
McAllister scored 26 goals in 140 appearances during his first spell with the club from 1996 to 2000.
He later returned to the Sky Blues as player-manager in April 2002, making a further 60 appearances, scoring 12 goals, before resigning as boss in January 2004.
And McAllister hopes the Sky Blues target promotion to the Premier League as champions rather than settling for automatic promotion.
Speaking exclusively to Grosvenor Casino, McAllister said: “The achievement of getting Coventry back to the top division, and they’ve been outside it for a long, long time, that would be a fantastic achievement.
“It is Coventry’s to lose. They’ve had little bumps in the road already this season, but I think they’ve calmed the place down now, and I think they’ll be fine.
“I think Coventry is a Premier League club. That’s biased because I’ve spent time there, but there’s something about Coventry that I admire.
“I think that’s [the title] has got to be the target. Not just being happy with getting a promotion, which obviously they would be, but their target will be maintaining that lead and going up as champions.
“That’s a big push for everybody concerned, right from the top to the bottom of the club. A great achievement.”
