FOOTBALL - Glen Johnson backs Frank Lampard to take Coventry City into the Premier League

GLEN Johnson believes former teammate Frank Lampard can achieve promotion with Coventry City this season.

Johnson spent three seasons with Lampard at Chelsea and also played with the current Coventry head coach on international duty with England.

And Johnson tipped Lampard to achieve promotion with the Sky Blues this season should he continue the club’s strong start to the campaign.

Speaking to 10bet, Johnson said: “As for Frank Lampard, I think he’ll prefer fighting for play-offs and promotion, even the title.

“If Lamps pulls it off with Coventry this season, they will be back in the Premier League, and that’s where everyone wants to be.

“Nothing surprises me in that league. There’s a lot of teams that are capable in the Championship.

“It’s just the ones that put a good run together who can end up going up via the promotion.

“There’s probably eight to 10 teams that can get relegated and probably eight teams that can go up.

“So it’s a crazy league, but I think whoever is most consistent and can put good runs together, then they’ve got a chance.

“But I think to predict who’s going to win the Championship or get promoted right now is almost impossible.

“But I see no reason why Frank can’t get them up if he can keep them performing consistently and getting the results.”

The right-back won a Premier League title and League Cup playing alongside Lampard at Chelsea.

He later played for Portsmouth, Liverpool and Stoke City and won 54 caps for England.
