MATTY Godden’s brace proved in vain as Coventry City lost 3-2 away at Cardiff City to suffer defeat for the first time since the opening day of the season.

Godden levelled the game in the first half before grabbing a late consolation after Dimitrios Goutas, Karlan Grant and Kion Etete all found the net for the home side at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The result means the Sky Blues sit 15th in the Championship table after suffering just their second defeat of the season.

Cardiff took the lead on eight minutes when Goutas powered home a header from six-yards out from Joe Ralls corner from the left.

However, Coventry equalised on 35 minutes when Godden finished on the turn in the box from Liam Kelly’s pass.

The Bluebirds reclaimed the lead on 61 minutes as Grant’s diving header found the bottom left corner from Ryan Wintle’s cross.

Mark Robins’ side almost drew level for a second time when the ball broke to Kasey Palmer in the box only for Jak Alnwick to tip the midfielder’s shot around the post.

However, Cardiff sealed the win on 84 minutes as Etete lashed a shot into the left corner of the goal past Ben Wilson after being played in behind the Coventry defence.

City reduced the deficit six minutes into injury time when Godden’s near post header from Jay Dasilva’s cross proved too strong for Alnwick.

However, the Sky Blues were unable to rescue a point in the remaining minutes to suffer their first defeat in five league matches.

Coventry are next in action at home to Huddersfield Town on Monday, September 25 with kick-off at 8pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
