FOOTBALL - Gustavo Hamer comes back to haunt Coventry City in defeat at Sheffield United

GUSTAVO Hamer came back to haunt Coventry City as the Sky Blues suffered a 3-1 defeat at new league leaders Sheffield United.

The Sky Blues scored a consolation goal courtesy of substitute Jack Rudoni in injury time at Bramall Lane.

That came after Hamer’s stunning free-kick broke the deadlock before Tyrese Campbell and Rhian Brewster struck to put the Blades in command.

And the result means Coventry remain fifth in the Championship table but could drop out of the play-off places if results elsewhere go against them this weekend.

The home side opened the scoring in style on 19 minutes when Hamer curled a free-kick into the top right corner from 25-yards out but refused to celebrate out of respect for his former club.

And the Blades doubled their lead on the half-hour mark as Campbell turned home Femi Seriki’s low cross from the right.

Coventry then lost goalkeeper Oliver Dovin to injury moments later after he appeared to clash knees with Campbell as he attempted a Cruyff turn to evade the Blades forward.

The medical team stretchered Dovin from the field with Bradley Collins on in his place.

And the Blades eventually sealed the points on 62 minutes as Brewster emphatically picked out the left corner of the goal from Ben Brereton Diaz’s pass.

The Sky Blues reduced the deficit in injury time when Luis Binks beat United goalkeeper Michael Cooper to a corner from the right and Rudoni volleyed the ball into an empty net from close range.

However, Coventry did not have enough time left to stage a comeback as the Blades proved too strong for Frank Lampard’s side.
