FOOTBALL - Gyokeres stunner helps Sky Blues past Millwall

VIKTOR Gyokeres scored a superb solo goal as Coventry City remained firmly in the play-off hunt with a 1-0 win against Millwall.

Gyokeres scored the winner on 67 minutes as City deservedly claimed all three points at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

The result means the Sky Blues sit 11th in the Sky Bet Championship table, five points outside of the play-off places with a game in hand on sixth-placed Watford.

Coventry started the better of the two teams and spurned a glorious chance to take the lead when Kasey Palmer slipped in Gyokeres only for George Long to make a crucial save.

And the home side continued to push for the opener when Brooke Norton-Cuffy worked tirelessly down the right hand side and appeared to have his shirt tugged in the box before Long tipped his low cross to safety.

The Sky Blues almost took the lead moments before the break when Gyokeres was played through by Palmer only for his shot to ricochet off Long and back onto the striker and travel inches past the post.

However, the Sweden international eventually broke the deadlock when he turned his man before curling the ball into the bottom right corner from 25-yards out.

Millwall’s best chance came with six minutes left to play as substitute Jamie Shackleton’s shot was cleared off the line by Luke McNally.

There was still time for one more chance for the visitors as teenager Romain Esse saw his initial effort blocked before his next attempt was crucially deflected behind by veteran defender Kyle McFadzean.

Coventry are next in action away at Rotherham United on Saturday, February 18 with kick-off at 3pm at the New York Stadium.
