JAMES Tomkins believes ‘squad depth’ will be key to Coventry City’s promotion chances under Frank Lampard this season.
Tomkins made more than 200 appearances for boyhood club West Ham United and also spent time on loan at Derby County before finishing his career at Crystal Palace.
Sky Blues head coach Lampard also came through the ranks at West Ham and later took charge of Derby in his first stint as a manager.
And Tomkins, who won promotion to the Premier League with the Hammers in 2011/12, insists Coventry’s squad depth will play the biggest part in the club’s quest for promotion.
Speaking to Boyle Sports, who offer the latest football betting, Tomkins said “It’s good that Frank Lampard had another opportunity because sometimes you don’t see that.
“A few managers haven’t done so well and then you don’t see them for many years after that. So it’s nice Frank got another chance, but let’s see.
“It’s been a good start and he’s done well so far. When that happened at Derby, he went on a great run there, didn’t he? So let’s see.
“I still think around Christmas time, that’s when you sort of see teams falling off a little bit because of how challenging those games are.
“They come fast in the Championship, and that’s when you rely on a big squad.
“But if he’s got the squad depth there, there’s no reason why he can’t be challenging for promotion this season.”
