JAMIE Paterson admits ‘it will never get better’ than scoring a last-minute winner for his boyhood club Coventry City.
Paterson came off the bench to volley home a 94th minute winner for Coventry against Portsmouth at the Coventry Building Society Arena in midweek.
And the boyhood Sky Blues fan could not hide his delight after scoring his first goal for the club since joining City on a free transfer in February.
Paterson said: “It’s all a bit of a blur, to be honest. Scoring a last-minute winner for the team you support, I don’t think it will ever get better than that unless it’s the play-off final or something like that.
“It’s weird, I don’t really know how to explain it.
“I’ve bided my time, just tried to train as hard as I can and just to get that opportunity, I think I’ve come off the bench three or four times and I haven’t even managed to get a shot off or have sort of a half opportunity.
“I always had in my head that if I had the chance, I’m just going to hit it and put my foot through it.
“There was nothing to lose sort of thing and to score in the 94th minute, the last kick of the game in a crucial game for us in a really a tough game is massive.”
Paterson volleyed Jack Rudoni’s cross into the right corner of the goal just seconds before the final whistle to spark wild scenes of celebration.
The 33-year-old only came on with five minutes of regulation time left to play.
And Paterson insists players making an impact from the bench has been one of City’s strengths this season.
Paterson added: “Honestly, it’s not going to sink in, probably not tomorrow, probably not for a little while.
“I don’t want to make it all about me, we’ve won a game, it’s three points, it’s a last-minute goal for the team I support.
“It’s a lovely story and all that sort of stuff, but the lads have grafted there and as substitutes, we’ve just got to try and come on the pitch and try and make some sort of impact.
“That’s our strength, our squad and our unity together and to score a goal like that, it pushes us into that next game, a bit of a positive energy and obviously the fans go home happy.”
Coventry are next in action against Hull City on Monday, April 14 with kick-off at 8pm at the MKM Stadium.
