FOOTBALL - Joel Latibeaudiere insists Coventry City will approach final games 'one step at a time' with club four points away from promotion

JOEL Latibeaudiere insists Coventry City will take the final games of the season ‘one step at a time’ with the club four points away from promotion.

A goalless draw away at Hull City on Easter Monday at the MKM Stadium means the Sky Blues can clinch promotion against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.

If Coventry win and both Middlesbrough and Millwall fail to win, the Sky Blues would seal promotion to the Premier League.

Should Middlesbrough or Millwall win, the Sky Blues would have to wait at least another game to seal promotion albeit a Coventry victory would all but mathematically assure City of a place in the Premier League next season.

However, Latibeaudiere insists Coventry are still taking things one game at a time with the club on the cusp of a top flight return for the first time in 25 years.

Latibeaudiere said: “It was a hard-earned point, we knew it was going to be tough especially with the position Hull are in.

“Both teams were at it. We did well to weather the initial opening of the game, they came with a lot of energy.

“We dealt with it really well and then we got on top. We needed to be a little bit cleaner and a little bit better going forward.

“To get a clean sheet is more than a goal for a defender so we’re always happy about that.

“Our goal is always take one step at a time. That’s how we’ve approached it throughout the year.

“The gaffer and the staff have been massive in keeping us grounded and working hard in training.

“The boys are just focused on getting as many wins as possible and ending the season as strong as possible.”

The defender missed Coventry’s Good Friday victory against Derby County after arriving back late from international duty with Jamaica.

Latibeaudiere could not help the Reggae Boyz qualify for this summer’s FIFA World Cup following a cruel 1-0 defeat against Democratic Republic of Congo after extra time in the inter-confederation play-offs.

However, Latibeaudiere felt Sky Blues boss Frank Lampard made the right decision regarding his minutes for Coventry over the Easter period.

Latibeaudiere added: “The gaffer rang me the night I got back [from international duty].

“He explained everything and I agreed with him. At the end of the day, he was trying to look after me.

“He was right in the end but I would have been ready if he needed me.

“But we had a good chat on the phone and he explained everything. I do think it was the right call.”

Coventry are next in action against already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, April 11 with kick-off at 12.30pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
