MARK Robins feels ‘too much naivety’ cost Coventry City in their 1-1 draw against fellow strugglers Queens Park Rangers.
The Sky Blues dropped into the Championship relegation zone after Kieran Morgan cancelled out Haji Wright’s early opener at Loftus Road.
And Robins admits his side need to start making better decisions on the ball and must play with confidence if they are to start picking up more points.
Robins said: “It’s building blocks, we have to take that and move on and take it into the game on Saturday against Luton.
“They’re good lads and they want to learn and win, but there is too much naivety in there and the decision making at times and the passing and getting rid of the ball, it’s like a hot potato.
“There’s a lack of confidence and that means we end up sitting back and invite the pressure and although we defended well, they have too much of the ball in our final third.
“I’m disappointed not to win the game. The game as a whole was symptomatic of losing games and there being noise about and you need to settle down and believe and it’s the confidence and the belief you need.”
Coventry made the perfect start when Wright’s shot squirmed through the gloves of QPR goalkeeper Paul Nardi after just four minutes.
However, teenage substitute Morgan levelled the game for the R’s on 63 minutes when his volley into the ground deceived Sky Blues goalkeeper Oliver Dovin.
After City spurned a late chance to win the game, Robins insists his side must start putting games to bed and felt goalkeeper Dovin should have kept out QPR’s equaliser
Robins added: “They were there for the taking and we didn’t go and put them to the sword because we sat back a little bit.
“They’re not a bad team, there’s no bad team in the league, you look at them and they are in a similar place to us, but it’s disappointing because we need to be putting games like this to bed.
“Ellis has a chance at the end and what we say is if someone is in a better position than you, pass it to them and they can tap it into an empty net.
“I don’t want to discourage people from shooting but if someone is in a better position than you then you pass it to them and they pass it into an empty net.
“It’s a poor goal [to concede]. I think the goalkeeper has to do better; he’s done everything right in the game other than that.
“He looked good with his hands, I don’t know how they’ve scored that one, it’s a disappointing goal to concede, but he’s a young player and he will learn.”
Coventry are next in action against Luton Town on Saturday, October 26 with kick-off at 12.30pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
