MATT Grimes admits Coventry City are still searching for their ‘creative spark’ following an opening day stalemate with Hull City.
Grimes played the full 90 minutes of the goalless draw at the Coventry Building Society Arena but could not break down a stubborn Tigers defence.
However, the midfielder remains confident Coventry will find their cutting edge as players build up their match fitness.
Grimes said: “I think the final third and the creative spark is the last thing to come as you get match fit.
“Hopefully the more we build connections on the pitch we see a little bit of improvement there.
“We just need something to fall for us and it could of quite easily but it didn’t, so we take the point and move on.
“We controlled the game quite a well and we had a fair bit of the ball and that’s exactly what we want to do, that’s our game model.
“It was a decent performance, but like I said, just a little bit of cutting edge and then we’ll get there.”
Coventry have now failed to win on the opening day of the season for the last four campaigns.
And Grimes admits the Sky Blues are still growing into the new campaign following a productive pre-season.
Grimes added: “A little bit disappointed to only come away with a point in the first game in the season.
“It got a little bit sticky at the end with a few tired bodies out there and obviously we’re just growing to the season as it comes.
“We take a point in the end, and we have a clean sheet, so we just move on to next week.
“We had a lot of games in pre-season, which got us as sharp as we possibly could be.
“As we’re going on through the season, we’ll pick up more match fitness and build better connections.
“Pre-season in the whole I thought was really good and I think we’re in a good place.”
Coventry are next in action against Luton Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, August 12 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the CBS Arena.
