NATHAN Jones felt Charlton Athletic deserved more from their defeat against Coventry City after the Addicks surrendered an early lead.
The visitors led through Harvey Knibbs’ early goal only for Josh Eccles to equalise for the Sky Blues before Ellis Simms scored a brace to seal the points for Coventry.
Charlton almost doubled their lead, as Bobby Thomas produced a crucial goalline clearance to keep out Lloyd Jones’ header, before Coventry went on to seal a fifth straight league win.
And Jones admits defeat against the league leaders at the Coventry Building Society Arena is part of the learning curve for his side.
Jones said: “We were right in the game. We took the lead and had three or four other opportunities – one cleared off the line.
“Then we lost a player to injury and had to shuffle the pack which gave them a little bit of impetus to score two quick goals around half time.
“We had a great opportunity to equalise and then they clinch the game.
“We were really competitive in the second half but we didn’t get the goal our play deserved.
“This is a difficult place to come to. They’re scoring goals for fun but I’m disappointed with the second and third goals. That’s a learning curve for us.
“We were overcautious and that’s what cost us. I’m also disappointed because we weren’t clinical. We could have gone further ahead and we didn’t take those opportunities.
“Coventry are always going to have opportunities because they’re a good side.
“We had five big players missing. Any side would struggle with that. If you take five players out of Coventry’s side, they’re not going to be quite the potent force [that they area].”
