FOOTBALL - O'Hare 'on top of the world' after Birmingham brace

Coventry Editorial 12th Dec, 2023   0

CALLUM O’Hare feels ‘on top of the world’ after scoring a brace in just his second start of the season against Birmingham City.

The midfielder scored his first goals in over a year to help the Sky Blues to a comfortable 2-0 win against Wayne Rooney’s Birmingham.

And the 25-year-old could not hide his delight at finding the back of the net as he finally looks to put his injury problems behind him.

O’Hare said: “I am on top of the world, I do not think my friends and family will be too happy but I am buzzing. It is what I have been waiting for all this time.

“I am so happy. You do not understand how bad it feels unless you are injured, how bad it is. To go out there when I am not one hundred per cent yet, I am just over the moon.

“Ask my mum, I said ‘Mum I am scoring two goals today’.

“Remember ages ago when he (Laurent Blanc) used to kiss (Fabien) Barthez’ head, I said to my dad ‘come here and let me kiss that head’.

“I kissed his head before the game twice and scored two goals. So now every game now I have to kiss my dad’s head.

“This time it worked. I do not know what it was but yes, I am so happy.”

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins heaped praise on the midfielder insisting O’Hare deserves all the plaudits following his match-winning performance.

Robins added: “I think he has been incredible because I mean looking back at Boxing Day last year and to see him was heartbreaking after the injury and then to see him come to terms with the injury and then go through that.

“The journey that he’s been on this this year has been really tough and lonely and we’ve given him space.

“We’ve given him time he’s worked really hard in between those times but he’s deserved a little bit of time off.

“The way he is around the place is really infectious and effervescent and he really deserves that.

“As a group, it’s bringing them together. It’ll bring them together and it knits everything together and it helps them to progress.

“Callum sort of typifies the Coventry City spirit and the way that we want to go about the job and he’s been a link between midfield and the forward since he’s been here but tonight was outstanding.

“He deserves everything and all the plaudits he’s going to get.”
