PLAY-OFF hero Paul Dickov admits Frank Lampard is surpassing everyone’s expectations in charge of Coventry City this season.
Dickov scored a famous equaliser at the death for Manchester City against Gillingham in the 1998/99 Second Division play-off final at the old Wembley.
The former Scotland international achieved back-to-back promotions with the Manchester club and also twice won promotion with Leicester City across two spells later in his career.
And four-time promotion winner Dickov admits Frank Lampard and Coventry City have surprised everyone this season after suffering a cruel defeat in the play-off semi-finals last term.
Speaking to Best Betting Bonuses, Dickov said: “I’m delighted for Frank, I really am.
“I think he’d done a great job at Derby. I think at Chelsea and at Everton he was a little hard done by.
“They had well documented problems off the pitch at the time.
“To see him doing what he’s doing with Coventry – last season, nobody would have expected him to be anywhere near the top.
“A lot of people in the summer thought that Coventry might have, after getting to the play-offs, they might have had a bit of a lull and dropped off a little bit.
“They were nobody’s favourites to get anywhere near the play-offs last year. Not even this year, I wouldn’t have thought so.
“The performances, the goals they are scoring, the way they’re playing.
“I’m delighted for Frank because he’s a fantastic guy, but he’s also a fantastic coach, which gets spoken about less.
“To see the way the team is playing with not many big name players, you might not know them all.
“That’s not disrespectful, but there are teams with more familiar names.
“But he’s got his group of players playing some wonderful football and scoring lots of goals.”
