COVENTRY United Women remain winless this season despite producing a spirited second-half performance in their 3-2 defeat at Birmingham City Women.
Former United player Mollie Green scored a late own goal to set up a grandstand finish after Mary McAteer netted on debut earlier in the half.
However, Coventry were unable to find a third goal having been dominated for large periods by a strong Birmingham side at St Andrew’s which featured three former United players.
The result leaves Coventry rooted to the bottom of the Barclays Women’s Championship table with the Red and Greens the only team in the division yet to pick up a single point.
Blues opened the scoring on 13 minutes when Jade Pennock fired a low shot past Jodie Whiteman from a tight angle.
And Birmingham doubled their lead on 19 minutes when Louise Quinn powered the ball home from close range from Green’s corner from the left.
The home side looked to have sealed the points on 59 minutes when substitute Ashley Hodson finished a loose ball on the turn to put Blues into a three-goal lead.
However, United reduced the deficit on 68 minutes when McAteer scored from close range as she met Alanah Mann’s superb cross from the right.
And the Red and Greens struck again on 89 minutes when Green inadvertently turned Meesha Dudley-Jones’ dangerous cross into her own net.
That was as close as United came to a leveller as Birmingham held on to secure a deserved three points.
Coventry are next in action at home to Southampton on Sunday, October 2 in the League Cup with kick-off at 3pm at Butts Park Arena.
