MARK Robins is seeking free-flowing football from his side ahead of Coventry City’s first home game of the season against newly-promoted Oxford United tonight.
The Sky Blues beat Bristol City 1-0 at Ashton Gate in midweek to reach the second round of the Carabao Cup after losing by the same scoreline to Stoke City in their opening game of the Championship season last weekend.
And ahead of the club’s first home game of the campaign Robins insists Coventry are building towards a free-flowing style of play.
Robins said: “There are areas we need to be miles better and we have spoken about that, so collectively we need to keep working towards that free-flowing football that we’re after.
“We have to work hard to achieve that especially against teams that will put you under pressure and there’s a lot of teams that will do that this season.
“It was exciting putting the team together. When the recruitment team come to me and you see what we could be, it’s exciting.
“My excitement has been building for a while, but its tempered a bit because you have to work towards that end result but that’s part and parcel.”
City booked their place in the second round of the Carabao Cup as Ellis Simms scored the only goal on 65 minutes, shortly after coming off the bench.
Simms produced a clinical finish into the bottom left corner from Kasey Palmer’s through ball to score City’s first competitive goal of the season.
That came after the Sky Blues lost by a single goal at the bet365 Stadium in their league opener as Lewis Baker won the game for the Potters with a 78th-minute strike.
Newly-promoted Oxford are the visitors to the Coventry Building Society Arena tonight.
The U’s made a dream start to life back in the second tier following a 25-year absence with a 2-0 victory against Norwich City on the opening weekend of the season.
Coventry host Oxford tonight (Friday, August 16) with kick-off at 8pm at the CBS Arena.
