BEN Sheaf scored with the final kick off the game as Coventry City ended their pre-season programme with a 2-1 victory away at League One side Exeter City.
Sheaf struck at the death after birthday boy Matty Godden put City ahead with Vince Harper on target for the Grecians at St James Park.
The Sky Blues had the better chances in the first half as Sheaf, Bobby Thomas and Godden all tried their luck while Brad Collins denied Pierce Sweeney at the other end.
And Exeter went close at the start of the second period when Sam Nombe headed inches wide from inside the six-yard box.
Coventry then created a good chance of their own as Exeter goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo was equal to Godden’s diving header from Josh Eccles’ cross.
And Godden was denied again moments later, after latching onto Gustavo Hamer’s through ball, as his goalbound shot was blocked on the line.
However, Godden eventually broke the deadlock on 68 minutes after heading Hamer’s corner past Sinisalo despite the keeper getting a glove to the ball.
Almost straight from the restart, Hamer and Godden combined again as the latter collected the former’s pass only to be denied by Sinisalo.
However, Exeter drew level on 81 minutes when Harper’s cross from the left evaded everyone in the Coventry box and went all the way into the net.
The Sky Blues pushed for a late winner and scored with the last kick of the game as Sheaf beat two players before curling a fine shot into the bottom corner from Hamer’s pass.
Coventry begin their 2023/24 Championship season away at Leicester City in the M69 derby on Sunday, August 6 with kick-off at 12pm (midday) at the King Power Stadium.
