ELLIS Simms scored an injury-time winner as Coventry City claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory away at Sheffield Wednesday.

Simms profited from a mistake by Owls goalkeeper James Beadle to finish into an empty net two minutes into injury time at Hillsborough.

That came after the striker headed City into the lead before half time before an unfortunate Joel Latibeaudiere own goal drew Wednesday level just past the hour mark.

The result means Coventry sit seventh in the Championship table, one point outside of the play-off places.

Wednesday had the game’s first chance as Oliver Dovin pushed Svante Ingelsson’s powerful effort from inside the penalty area to safety.

However, City broke the deadlock on 16 minutes when Simms glanced Jack Rudoni’s cross from the right into the bottom left corner from eight-yards out.

The home side went close to a leveller as Dovin pushed Ike Ugbo’s venomous shot behind for a corner at his near post.

Coventry thought they had doubled their lead later in the first half when Simms bundled the ball home in a challenge with Beadle after the Owls stopper could only parry Rudoni’s initial effort.

However, the referee penalised Simms for a foul as he slid in to turn the ball home and awarded Wednesday a free-kick.

The hosts drew level on 62 minutes as Dovin pushed Marvin Johnson’s low cross from the left onto the legs of Latibeaudiere and the ball ricocheted into the net.

City almost restored their lead when substitute Ephron Mason-Clark floated a cross to the back post from the left and fellow sub Tatsuhiro Sakamoto headed the ball towards goal only for Beadle to produce an acrobatic one-handed stop.

However, the Sky Blues snatched the points in injury time when Beadle failed to gather Milan van Ewijk’s clearance inside his own penalty area and Simms charged in to steal the ball from the keeper and finish into an empty net.
