VIKTOR Gyokeres scored the only goal as Coventry City beat Cardiff City 1-0 to secure their first away win of the season.
The Sweden international grabbed the winner on 34 minutes to hand Coventry just their second win of the campaign at the Cardiff City Stadium.
And the result means the Sky Blues are now just four points from safety, despite being rooted to the bottom of the Championship table, with at least two games in hand on the teams above them.
Coventry should have taken the lead when Gyokeres beat Cardiff goalkeeper Ryan Allsop to a loose ball, which left the latter stranded, only for the striker to blaze over with the goal at his mercy.
Cardiff responded with a chance of their own as Callum Robinson drilled an effort just wide of the post with Ben Wilson at full stretch.
And the visitors took the lead when Matty Godden superbly flicked the ball into the path of Jamie Allen who was denied by Allsop with the keeper only able to divert the ball into the path of Gyokeres who finished into an empty net from close range.
The Bluebirds thought they had drawn level when the ball found its way to Robinson who finished into the net only for the goal to be ruled out for offside after the referee consulted with his assistant.
And Mark Robins’ side looked to make the most of that reprieve when Gyokeres burst through as he fired into the side netting from a difficult angle.
City had one last chance to wrap up the points when substitute Martyn Waghorn picked out Allen in the box as the midfielder’s soft header was tipped over the bar by Allsop.
Coventry are next in action at home to Sheffield United on Wednesday, October 19 with kick-off at 7.45pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
