JORDAN Beyer’s late goal extended Coventry City’s unbeaten run to five matches as the Sky Blues suffered a late 1-0 defeat against league leaders Burnley.

City competed well with Vincent Kompany’s side for much of the contest before Beyer headed home from a set-piece on 82 minutes to settle the game at Turf Moor.

The result means Coventry sit 15th in the Sky Bet Championship table, six points outside of the play-off places.

Mark Robins’ side had the game’s first chance when Viktor Gyokeres cut in from the left before finding Jamie Allen who shot into the side netting from 12-yards out.

And Coventry went close again after Gyokeres released Ben Sheaf who in turn played in Kasey Palmer who saw his shot blocked behind as he burst into the box.

From the resulting corner, Gus Hamer’s cross was punched clear by Burnley goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.

City spurned a golden chance to take the lead in the second period when Gyokeres latched onto a short back pass before racing in goal and attempting to round Muric only for Josh Brownhill to make a superb recovery challenge.

The home side then missed a gilt-edged chance of their own as Manuel Benson curled an effort wide of the target from Jóhann Berg Gudmundsson’s driven cross from the left.

And Gudmundsson then produced another excellent ball from the left that was met by the head of Nathan Tella only for Ben Wilson to make a fine save.

However, Burnley eventually broke the deadlock with eight minutes left to play as Beyer headed in Gudmundsson’s corner from the right from six yards out.

Coventry are next in action at home to Norwich City on Saturday, January 21 with kick-off at 12.30pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
